Friday 16 October 2026 at 3:30 pm, as part of the Matematica in Azione seminar cycle, Prof. Vittorio De Iuliis (Università San Raffaele Roma) will hold the following talk
Title: Learning Dynamical Models from Data: A Short Journey Through Linear System Identification
Abstract: Estimating models from data is an old problem: in 1801 Gauss recovered the orbit of Ceres, laying the foundation for the method of least squares. Moving beyond static curve fitting, this seminar explores the identification of dynamical systems, where models must serve prediction, estimation, and control. We will see how central questions in linear system identification translate directly into linear algebra, involving equivalence classes under change of basis, ranks of Hankel matrices, orthogonal projections, and the singular value decomposition. Finally, the talk connects these classical foundations to the rapidly growing field of data-driven control and modern AI.

The seminar will be held in Room U3-01 (U3 Building | Piazza della Scienza 2, Milano).
