The Mean Exit Time for Submanifolds / Rost nilpotence and direct sums

Monday 9 June 2025, from 2 pm in Room 2109 (2nd Floor) - U5 Building, Leandro de Freitas Pessoa (Federal University of Piauí, Brazil) and Stefan Gille (University of Alberta, Canada) will give the following talks

Speaker: Leandro de Freitas Pessoa

Title: The Mean Exit Time for Submanifolds

Abstract: We will discuss the mean exit time for Brownian motion on a submanifold. We will show that minimal submanifolds with infinite mean exit time cannot be isometrically immersed in cylinders (horocylinders), cones, and wedges of certain product spaces.

Speaker: Stefan Gille

Title: Rost nilpotence and direct sums

Abstract: In the first half of the talk I will explain Rost nilpotence and its applications, and then discuss whether this property holds for a finite direct sum of motives if it holds for all summands.  It turns out that this is the case if one assumes a slightly stronger version of Rost nilpotence which -- as I will explain -- actually holds for all cases where the 'original' form of Rost nilpotence has been verified.
