TITLE: Two problems with L_2
Abstract: In his investigation in the 1950s of rings which fail to possess the Invariant Basis Number Property, Leavitt introduced a class of algebras we now call Leavitt algebras. C*-algebraic analogues of these algebras were introduced in the 70s/80s by Cuntz, although not intentionally. Cuntz’s algebras have played a fundamental role in the theory of C*-algebras ever since their introduction. It is an ongoing program of research to look back at the Leavitt algebras to see if they play an equally important role in abstract algebra. In this talk I will describe two open problems concerning the Leavitt algebra L_2, and I will discuss the small amount of progress we have made on these problems.
