Computational Mathematics

Title: Computational Mathematics

Abstract: This is a general talk about computational mathematics. We will trace its fascinating history from ancient times to modern day in terms of people, machines and algorithms. We will discuss the goals and practices of computational mathematics, and the challenges and opportunities that it provides.

Susanne C. Brenner is a Louisiana State University System Boyd Professor. She holds a joint appointment with the Department of Mathematics and Center for Computation and Technology (CCT). At CCT she is also serving as the Associate Director for Academic Affairs since 2008. During 2021-2022 she served as President of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). She served as President-Elect in 2020, and a one year term as Past President in 2023. In 2005 she was awarded a Humboldt-Forschungspreis (Humboldt Research Award) from the German Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. She received a Humboldt Re-invitation Research Award in 2023. In 2011 she was awarded the AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture Prize.  She is a SIAM Fellow (Class of 2010), AMS Fellow (Inaugural Class 2013), AAAS Fellow (2012), and AWM Fellow (2020).

She serves on the editorial boards of Mathematics of Computation, (Managing Editor February 1, 2012 - January 31, 2024), SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, Numerische Mathematik, Numerical Algorithms, Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis, the Journal of Numerical Mathematics, and Computational Methods in Applied Mathematics. She is also the Editor-in-Chief of the SIAM Classics in Applied Mathematics book series. She served on the National Science Foundation Advisory Committee for the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (2016-2022) and as a Member-at-Large of the American Association for the Advancement of Science Section A (2017-2021) In addition, she was a member of the Electorate Nominating Committee for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (Section A) and the SIAM Fellows Selection Committee (2014-2016; Chair 2015-2016). She is a past SIAM Vice President for Publications and served on the SIAM Council and Board, and the AMS Council.
