MICROGEOMETRY AND PHASE TRANSFORMATIONS

Abstract:
Solids undergoing phase transformations involving a change of shape at a critical temperature typically develop beatiful patterns of fine microstructure, in which the deformation gradient changes rapidly at small length-scales. From the point of view of nonlinear elasticity, the formation of such microsrtucture is associated with nonattainment of minimum for the corresponding energy functional. The morphology of microstructure is strongly influenced by the requirement that the deformation gradients be compatible. The lecture will review some tools of mocrogeometry (quasiconvexity, gradient Young measures, generalizations of the Hamarad jump condition ...) that can to help understand this morphology.
